Morel Mushrooms is a seasonal wild edible mushroom with a unique earthy and nutty flavour. They are found around the base of apple and pine trees in the Northern area of Pakistan in Hindu Kush, Karakoram, and Himalaya mountain ranges. Their hunts start in spring and early summer when the snow melts and soil become soft and moist.

Fresh Morels are then dried in sunlight or indirectly in a room heated by burning woods. Pakistan is one of the large exporters of Morel Mushroom. Pakistan mainly exports these into European countries like France, Switzerland, China, and the Middle East, where it becomes part of a luxury cousin.

Morel Mushrooms are mainly found in the Province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), which produced almost 70% of Morel Mushrooms in Pakistan. These are collected from Swat, Dir, Mansehra, Chitral, Afridi Tirah, Kurram district, and Orakzai Tirah.

Different types of Morel Mushrooms that are found in Swat KPK are;

1. Morchella conica Fries (Conical morel) ( FZ-MO-01)
These are collected from Chail Valley, Kohistan, and Malam Jabba. These mainly grow in pine trees forest, and it is reported that it makes 48% of morels collected in Swat. It is in greyish colour at the early stage, and on maturity, it turns to blackish colour.

2. Morchella esculenta (L.) Pers. (Common morel) ( FZ-MO-02)
These are found in coniferous vegetation. This type of Morel is collected from Miandom, Chail, Kohistan, Chuprial, and Shangla. It makes 32% of total morels collected in Swat. Its colour is creamy white at an early stage, and on maturity, it turns to yellow.

3. Morchella rotunda (Fr.) Boud. (Rounded morel) ( FZ-MO-03)
This type of Morel is collected from Swat’s temperate forest, and it forms 6% of the total collected Morels in Swat. It poses yellow colour at an early stage but changes it’s colour blackish when it comes in contact with some other substance.

4. Morchella deliciosa Fr. (Tulip morel/white morel) ( FZ-MO-04)
This type of Morel is mainly collected in July and found near the river and streams side area and under apple trees. It makes 7% of total morels collected in Swat. It poses a yellow colour.

5. Morchella semilibera DC. (Half-free morel) ( FZ-MO-05)
This type of Morel infrequently grow under pine trees and are collected during spring and rainy seasons. At an early stage, its colour is pale and becomes black on maturity. It makes 3% of the total morel collected in Swat.

6. Morchella elata Fr. (Black morel) ( FZ-MO-06)
This type of morel mushroom grown in shady and damp place near the river. It makes almost 2% of the total morel collection in Swat.

7. Morchella crassipes (Vent.) Pers. (Thick-footed morel) ( FZ-MO-07)
This type of morel mushroom grows on soil with rich organic components. The stipe and pileus of Morchella crassipes are thick as compared to other types of Morel. It consists of 2% of total morels mushroom collected in Swat.
